Question: What do you teach kids?

Answer: There are many different kinds of classes for kids to attend. Older kids(ages 7-14) have a choice of attending sparring class, joint locking class, throwing class, self defense class and forms class. Younger children (ages 4-6) have a special class called the "Little Dragons" class. Although the theme of each class may focus on different physical skills, all of the classes have the same kind of mental / spiritual benefits for children. The learning of valuable skills such as patience, self control, leadership, and public speaking are built into every class.

Question: Do you teach children to fight?

Answer: At Las Vegas Kung Fu Martial Arts School we teach children practical, proven self-defense methods that do not rely on individual techniques but rather on principles. However, teaching children fighting techniques can be dangerous if they are not taught the proper use and responsibility of the power they have. We teach kids that self defense is just that, defensive. It is only to be used when you are in danger of getting hurt. We ensure that children will not go home and use it on a sibling or classmate at school.

Question: How does martial arts instruction teach kids self esteem and confidence?

Answer: Competence is confidence. Confidence is gained through having set goals and achieving those goals. Our school's belt system is the key. Children earn a different color belt or rank when they advance to the next level. Kids accomplish their short term goal while at the same time progress to the longer term goal of black belt. When they get promoted, the recognition that students receive from their peers, is one of the most powerful forces of change. Promotions in rank tremendously improves the way they view and feel about themselves.

Question: What is self discipline?

Answer: Self discipline is the ability to do something without being told (even when you do not feel like doing it) Our school's philosophy is that self discipline is different that discipline. Discipline for us, is when someone scolds or nags kids into doing what they want. At our Las Vegas Kung Fu Martial Arts school, we teach kids that a good martial artist is always self disciplined. Meaning, doing what one needs to do even if one doesn’t feel like doing it. Also, self discipline means doing something without being told to do it. At our school we have a wonderful staff of patient instructors who work with the kids on being able to recognize and change undisciplined behavior, our school's instructors have high expectations and are also very clear about limits. We enforce good rules of behavior in our martial arts school, and we expect the same good behavior at home and in school.

Question: How can martial arts channel aggression?

Answer: Some doctors actually prescribed our school for treatment of aggression because of the positive outlet it gives the kids. Martial arts classes provide a safe place for kids to honestly express their true feelings through movement. Also, the senior ranking students in class provide aggressive kids with a positive examples of leadership and mutual respect. Your child will learn the right way to act and react to the world around them.

The truth about martial arts for kids

How much kids get out of class, will of course depend on how much effort they put into it. When children try really hard at getting proficient at something, they receive the benefits of that effort. Anything worthwhile requires work. If training were easy, then kids would not get anything from it. ONLY by going through rigorous training and succeeding will they receive the benefits of perseverance, confidence and self discipline. More than any other activity, martial arts gives children the chance to become their true selves. If that is the kind of experience you want for your child then please contact us.
