About us

Hi my name is Kevin Kawada and I have been involved in the martial arts for over 22 years. I can't visualize what my life would be like if I were not a school owner and instructor.

Training in the martial arts has given me so many benefits.  I wake up every morning and want everyone in my entire community about what it can do. I want everyone to feel the same way that I do about martial arts. Every day I work as hard as I can to make my academy a place that people will get the same life changing experience that I had.

Training in the ancient art of Kung Fu of course.

Here's the story.​

Before I started martial arts training at the age of 19, I was just like many other teenagers that I knew. I wanted to be big and jacked like the bodybuilders in muscle and fitness magazine.

In fact my friends and I would pour over the magazines and then lift weights right afterwords. I made some modest gains but back then I had a really hard time putting on any kind of mass.

When I turned 19 years old a friend of mine invited me to attend a martial arts class with him. Needless to say I was hooked after my first class, I remember walking out of class on that first night. There was a small step that led out of the building, and as I took the step out into the parking lot my left leg collapsed and I almost fell to the floor!

The step out into the parking lot wasn't even a full size step it must have been only about 6 inches tall. However my legs had been fatigued to the point of failure and now they wer having trouble supporting my own weight.

That first night of kung fu class here was not a weight in sight. Yet I still got the hardest workout I have had up until that point.

So what was it that made my legs give out?

I know that today body weight workouts are all the rage in the fitness world. During the 80's and 90's body weight training was looked down upon in the bodybuilding world.

Think about this.

Kung fu is an ancient art that goes back hundreds of years. In those times there were no weights or machines to work out so in order to get in shape...combat shape....fighting shape...body weight exercises were the default thing to do.

As you may have noticed, when you compare the body of a martial artist and the body of someone who works out at the gym there is a huge difference

The martial artist has a body like no other

A martial artist does not want to be bulky. A martial artist does not want to be stiff. A martial artists needs to have stamina and endurance.

So if these are the things that a good fighter needs to have then the workout must mimic and follow what fighting would be like

So in our class we combine 3 things: Strength, Flexibility and Cardio into ONE workout.

Let me be a bit more specific.

Warm up exercises for our Kung Fu class strives to build up your speed. Just as an example, a workout could start with pushups as the strength building exercise. Then the workout would move immediately to stretching the muscles of the upper body such as the shoulders and the back of the arms. Following that, your workout would then instantly move to kung fu punching.

Following this pattern of exercises is a super efficient way of working out.

Think about the value of this, it typically only takes 45 min to get in a FULL workout. There are no machines that you to have wait for. There is no downtime when changing from one exercise to another. The exercise that we will show you are specific to the martial arts. They are all short and brief but at the same time intense. The intensity at volume at which you perform them is ultimately going to yield the results that you are looking for.

OK, I know what you are thinking.

You feel a bit of anxiety about the word intensity.

​Don't worry

Kung Fu exercise can be as challenging or as easy as you make it. Our school is not the military. I know you are imagining a drill Sargent yelling at you to "drop and give me twenty"

Don't worry. You will never be yelled at in class. It is my philosophy that everyone is running their own race.

When you are in our class you will get the same set of instructions that we give to students who have been training for a while. The older students know the standard way of doing the exercise already.  They also know that they can add to the exercise in a number of different ways to make it more challenging for them. That way no matter what your level of fitness is, you will get a great workout without overdoing it.

Here are some of the way you can make each exercise more challenging for your self.​

You can perform them with explosiveness, add extra repetitions or even shortening the breaks between exercise will all add up to a super challenging workout for any skill level.

The exercises of kung fu don't just use body weight to add resistance. You can also make each exercise more about balance than strength or perhaps make each exercise more about speed. 

The bottom line is that you take thing at your own pace here. Even slow progress IS progress.

Just imagine having the balance and coordination of a kung fu master. You can, through practicing the basic bodyweight exercise found only in a martial arts workout.

These martial arts warmups give you results fast because they are not isolating muscles like in bodybuilding. For example the basic dumbbell curl, this exercise works just one muscle the bicep.

Kung fu warmups on the other hand utilize many muscle groups at the same time.

This is called compound movements. These are extremely effective for gaining strength and flexibility.

Proper warm-ups not only induce blood flow to all of the muscles in your body, but also consists of a cardio element as well. A quick burst of cardio exercises like high knees in between pushups and stretching will keep your heart rate up during the whole workout.

More important than that, warm-ups will increase your strength, stamina and the amount of oxygen your body can take in.

So what does this all mean to you?

Well, after a workout like that your body will feel light and limber and the entire body is “woken up” Your body can stay in this state for hours after your workout. Your metabolism greatly increase and help you to keep burning calories even when at rest.

I've always thought of myself as being physically active; I was still lifting weights even after my athletic career effectively ended in the late nineties.

This led to quite a shock for me when I was diagnosed with adult onset Type 2 Diabetes approximately two years ago (my employment means that I sit behind a desk for 8+ hours a day, and I hardly even noticed that I had added a few extra pounds). My Doctor helped me to understand what Diabetes is about and what medications he recommended that I take. I took the medication for the better part of a year, but I continued to hear and read about Diabetes drugs being considered dangerous or life-threatening. To me, the daily dose of drugs almost sounded more harmful then the disease, so I vowed to find another way to combat the disease.

I came up with the usual list of resolutions that people regurgitate when they want to get off Diabetes drugs. I decided I needed to lose weight, change my diet, and become more active. I considered all the usual ways to lose weight and become more active (running, swimming, exercise bike, pilates, etc.). I've done all those activities before with varying degrees of success, but the thought of going back to that stuff didn't sound like a long term winner because I find them all very dull and boring. I wanted to find something that I could learn from and that would also be fun so that I would be more likely to stick with it over the long haul.

I have a good friend that started taking Kung Fu lessons at the Las Vegas Kung Fu Academy, and he highly recommended it. I met with Instructor Kevin Kawada and I decided to try a couple of classes to see if this could help me in my own situation. After only coming to two or three classes, I could already feel my body changing. This type of instruction was totally foreign to me. Throughout all my years of athletics I had never really been taught about the balance between strength, speed, balance, flexibility and being relaxed. I had been hearing for some time that many professional Football and Baseball players have been doing martial arts to better themselves in their sport. I now really appreciate how beneficial martial arts are for athletes for any sport. If I could jump into a time machine and change anything about my life, it would be to go back 20 or so years and begin my training at a very young age.

I have been taking classes at the Las Vegas Kung Fu Academy since September of 2007. Since that time, I have not taken any medication for my Diabetes whatsoever, and when I test my blood sugar, it is never above a normal range. I have been able to drop weight and maintain my weight at a level that is about 15% lower than where my weight was a couple of years ago. I have noticed a big difference in my day to day quality of life that is completely separate from the Diabetes. Due to the flexibility I have gained over the past few months, I have almost completely eliminated the back and knee pain that I previously thought was part of the aging process.

When I was 19 years old and lifting weights on a regular schedule, I noticed one thing that I still remember to this day.

I was stiff.
