I know how you feel. You work hard everyday. You are sick and tired of your daily routine of just coming home every day and watching television, cooking dinner and slowly letting your body age and deteriorate.
That's just the tip of the iceberg.
Work has its own stresses. People around you are demanding and the boss needs to get the project done NOW. Or maybe just the job itself just robs you of your energy and takes a lot out of you.
You KNOW that you need an outlet, that will restore you and your mental energy.
You have always wondered about martial arts classes and you absolutely hate going to the gym You can never stay consistent with going to the gym because there is no goal, no reward for you to achieve when lifting weights or jogging.
You know that if, you were enrolled in an actual class, you would finally be able to stick with it and enjoy the process of getting fit.
Would you like to feel young again, full of energy, like you did when you were a teenager? Do you remember when your joints didn’t hurt and you were flexible and agile enough to jump over a small wall with ease?
Can you remember when you were 18 years old and in great shape?
Here's some great news for you.
You can feel that way again.
Hi my name is Kevin Kawada and I have been involved in the martial arts for over 22 years. I can't visualize what my life would be like if I were not a school owner and instructor.
Training in the martial arts has given me so many benefits. I wake up every morning and want everyone in my entire community about what it can do. I want everyone to feel the same way that I do about martial arts. Every day I work as hard as I can to make my academy a place that people will get the same life changing experience that I had.
I really want you to make martial arts training a part of your life too.
It is a fun, fulfilling, motivating, workout, where everyone walks away with something new each day. I know of no other type of exercise that can do all of these things.
So what is the secret?
Training in the ancient art of Kung Fu of course.
Here's the story.
Before I started martial arts training at the age of 19, I was just like many other teenagers that I knew. I wanted to be big and jacked like the bodybuilders in muscle and fitness magazine.
In fact my friends and I would pour over the magazines and then lift weights right afterwords. I made some modest gains but back then I had a really hard time putting on any kind of mass.
When I turned 19 years old a friend of mine invited me to attend a martial arts class with him. Needless to say I was hooked after my first class, I remember walking out of class on that first night. There was a small step that led out of the building, and as I took the step out into the parking lot my left leg collapsed and I almost fell to the floor!
The step out into the parking lot wasn't even a full size step it must have been only about 6 inches tall. However my legs had been fatigued to the point of failure and now they wer having trouble supporting my own weight.
That first night of kung fu class here was not a weight in sight. Yet I still got the hardest workout I have had up until that point.
So what was it that made my legs give out?
Body weight exercises.
This is more of an advanced warmup
Don't worry if you can't do this yet
Make it your goal to one day be able to this
I know that today body weight workouts are all the rage in the fitness world. During the 80's and 90's body weight training was looked down upon in the bodybuilding world.
Think about this.
Kung fu is an ancient art that goes back hundreds of years. In those times there were no weights or machines to work out so in order to get in shape...combat shape....fighting shape...body weight exercises were the default thing to do.
As you may have noticed, when you compare the body of a martial artist and the body of someone who works out at the gym there is a huge difference
The martial artist has a body like no other
A martial artist does not want to be bulky. A martial artist does not want to be stiff. A martial artists needs to have stamina and endurance.
So in our class we combine 3 things: Strength, Flexibility and Cardio into ONE workout.
Let me be a bit more specific.
Warm up exercises for our Kung Fu class strives to build up your speed. Just as an example, a workout could start with pushups as the strength building exercise. Then the workout would move immediately to stretching the muscles of the upper body such as the shoulders and the back of the arms. Following that, your workout would then instantly move to kung fu punching.
Following this pattern of exercises is a super efficient way of working out.
Think about the value of this, it typically only takes 45 min to get in a FULL workout. There are no machines that you to have wait for. There is no downtime when changing from one exercise to another. The exercise that we will show you are specific to the martial arts. They are all short and brief but at the same time intense. The intensity at volume at which you perform them is ultimately going to yield the results that you are looking for.
OK, I know what you are thinking.
You feel a bit of anxiety about the word intensity.
Kung Fu exercise can be as challenging or as easy as you make it. Our school is not the military. I know you are imagining a drill Sargent yelling at you to "drop and give me twenty"
Don't worry. You will never be yelled at in class. It is my philosophy that everyone is running their own race.
When you are in our class you will get the same set of instructions that we give to students who have been training for a while. The older students know the standard way of doing the exercise already. They also know that they can add to the exercise in a number of different ways to make it more challenging for them. That way no matter what your level of fitness is, you will get a great workout without overdoing it.
Here are some of the way you can make each exercise more challenging for your self.
You can perform them with explosiveness, add extra repetitions or even shortening the breaks between exercise will all add up to a super challenging workout for any skill level.
The exercises of kung fu don't just use body weight to add resistance. You can also make each exercise more about balance than strength or perhaps make each exercise more about speed.
The bottom line is that you take thing at your own pace here. Even slow progress IS progress.
These martial arts warmups give you results fast because they are not isolating muscles like in bodybuilding. For example the basic dumbbell curl, this exercise works just one muscle the bicep.
Kung fu warmups on the other hand utilize many muscle groups at the same time.
This is called compound movements. These are extremely effective for gaining strength and flexibility.
Proper warm-ups not only induce blood flow to all of the muscles in your body, but also consists of a cardio element as well. A quick burst of cardio exercises like high knees in between pushups and stretching will keep your heart rate up during the whole workout.
More important than that, warm-ups will increase your strength, stamina and the amount of oxygen your body can take in.
So what does this all mean to you?
Well, after a workout like that your body will feel light and limber and the entire body is “woken up” Your body can stay in this state for hours after your workout. Your metabolism greatly increase and help you to keep burning calories even when at rest.
I've always thought of myself as being physically active; I was still lifting weights even after my athletic career effectively ended in the late nineties.
This led to quite a shock for me when I was diagnosed with adult onset Type 2 Diabetes approximately two years ago (my employment means that I sit behind a desk for 8+ hours a day, and I hardly even noticed that I had added a few extra pounds). My Doctor helped me to understand what Diabetes is about and what medications he recommended that I take. I took the medication for the better part of a year, but I continued to hear and read about Diabetes drugs being considered dangerous or life-threatening. To me, the daily dose of drugs almost sounded more harmful then the disease, so I vowed to find another way to combat the disease.
I came up with the usual list of resolutions that people regurgitate when they want to get off Diabetes drugs. I decided I needed to lose weight, change my diet, and become more active. I considered all the usual ways to lose weight and become more active (running, swimming, exercise bike, pilates, etc.). I've done all those activities before with varying degrees of success, but the thought of going back to that stuff didn't sound like a long term winner because I find them all very dull and boring. I wanted to find something that I could learn from and that would also be fun so that I would be more likely to stick with it over the long haul.
I have a good friend that started taking Kung Fu lessons at the Las Vegas Kung Fu Academy, and he highly recommended it. I met with Instructor Kevin Kawada and I decided to try a couple of classes to see if this could help me in my own situation. After only coming to two or three classes, I could already feel my body changing. This type of instruction was totally foreign to me. Throughout all my years of athletics I had never really been taught about the balance between strength, speed, balance, flexibility and being relaxed. I had been hearing for some time that many professional Football and Baseball players have been doing martial arts to better themselves in their sport. I now really appreciate how beneficial martial arts are for athletes for any sport. If I could jump into a time machine and change anything about my life, it would be to go back 20 or so years and begin my training at a very young age.
I have been taking classes at the Las Vegas Kung Fu Academy since September of 2007. Since that time, I have not taken any medication for my Diabetes whatsoever, and when I test my blood sugar, it is never above a normal range. I have been able to drop weight and maintain my weight at a level that is about 15% lower than where my weight was a couple of years ago. I have noticed a big difference in my day to day quality of life that is completely separate from the Diabetes. Due to the flexibility I have gained over the past few months, I have almost completely eliminated the back and knee pain that I previously thought was part of the aging process.
I would absolutely recommend the Las Vegas Kung Fu Academy to anyone. The way that the classes are taught makes it a very easy place for a beginner to get started in martial arts. Instructor Kevin makes sure that everyone learns at their own pace, all the instructors are encouraging and humble. Instructor Kevin is big on pointing out that there is no secret to Kung Fu. From what I've experienced, that does seem to be true in regards to learning Kung Fu as a martial art. I might just add that if there is a secret to Kung Fu, the secret is that in order to reap the benefits of it you have to be consistent in your training. If you are consistent in your training, you will be able to improve your life and learn something that could even save your life one day.
Belief in yourself comes from accomplishment. The best part is that the more you achieve in the martial arts the more confidence you gain.
Now of course, it takes hard work and dedication to achieve a high level in the martial arts but if it were easy, you wouldn't get anything out of it. You would not feel the same sense of self confidence your self esteem would remain the same.
But make no mistake about it.
Our classes gives you the total package combining strength, endurance and flexibility.
The ultimate result of all of this is that you will gain functional strength and fitness from doing martial arts.
Now you are probably wondering what exactly do I mean by functional strength? Functional strength is the type of strength used in everyday activities. Functional strength is natural and fluid.
The best part about it is that It helps you to perform at a much greater level in ANY sport.
When I was 19 years old and lifting weights on a regular schedule, I noticed one thing that I still remember to this day.
I was stiff.
I could not stretch, I always felt tight and if you were to test my speed back then It would be at snail level. I would train my chest and arms every other day but I couldn't do very many pushups.
I didn't feel “natural”
Most people will feel a big difference in general agility, strength and flexibility within just two weeks of starting to do these basic exercises.
Let me ask you this question.
Can you imagine what you could achieve if you can apply these strengths to other aspects of your life?
The bottom line is, that no matter how many times you change your free weight routine or switch to new machine, working out at the gym is going to start feeling stale.
“I am too busy”, I don't have the will power” or “I'm just too lazy”
When you start up exercising you have the motivation but as time goes on we feel less and less motivated. You are too tired to get off the couch and start. Then comes the guilt of not having enough discipline to do it.
But what if I told you that everyone is just like you?
Everyone has there ups and downs and everyone will one day hit the wall.
So why am I telling you this?
Is it not my job to call you up and yell at you to get to class?
Who holds you accountable then? It's the friends that you make in class.
At our academy all of the workouts have a social component to them.
That's right you will be working and interacting with other human beings.
There are so many exercises and drills that 2 students can do together, and in addition all of the self defense techniques are practiced and learned with a partner.
The fact is, In today's society it is easy tot feel isolated.
That is what's great about martial arts you develop friendships. You see the same people in class every week. You get to know them pretty well.
Then you start to think to yourself “If I don't go to class today my friends will know"
Here's what I mean.
Our school is a tribe. It is a community. The students here are just like you.
They want the benefits of martial arts training as much as you do. They are here to encourage you and everyone wants to see you succeed.
You see, if you succeed that means that there is one more high level training partner for them to work with in class. That benefits their training because the only way to get better is to work with better and better people.
As I said before, everyone is running your own race and we are all a work in progress.
So here is the next step.
So, instead of wishful thinking, now it's time to actually do something about your fitness. It is time to sign up for classes.
The 5 class pack is a perfect introduction into our program. By the end of 5 classes you will know for sure if martial arts are right for YOU. You will know whether we are good teachers or not. You will know how challenging class is and whether you are up for it. You will know how friendly our academy is.
The most common fear for people looking into enrolling into the martial arts, is the fear of looking foolish in front of other people. They believe that they will not be able to keep up with the rest of the people in class. Their most common question is “How do you integrate new students into a class that’s already been training for a while?”
The answer is that we have beginner through advanced classes. There are some intermediate and advanced skill level students in these beginner classes but they understand that the curriculum will be catered toward beginners. They are actually a good source of information. They are there to help out.
At our school, we specialize in teaching beginners
When you start your training, you will learn to weapons, falling techniques (ukemi) and self defense that requires getting down on the mats. Knowing this, we strive to keep our floors super clean. All of the equipment we use gets replace every few years, so you know it's safe. When you see the studio itself you will know that you have come to the right place. We want you to be proud of your school, because it is as much your school as it is ours.
At our academy we know every single person by name. You will NEVER be just another number here. Here, we don't just do martial arts, martial arts is something that we believe in. We know the benefit that you will get through training and we want you to make it part of your life like we do. In fact, If you knew what martial arts could do for you and where you would be in 5 years you would never miss a class.
Our jobs as instructors is to inoculate, and infect you with same enthusiasm and motivation that we feel everyday.
We are here to support you. Do you have a problem specific to you? Have questions about any technique? We have you covered.

"Dear Kevin and Renee, I would like to take this time to thank you for the positive changes you and your studio has made to my life over the last six months. Before I joined your studio, I called and spoke to Kevin on the telephone. I was inquiring about the type of training you provided. I was looking for a studio that I could learn the art of kung fu, but needed a place that was patient and encouraging.
I wanted an exercise program that engaged my mind and body. I would like to tell you that you have provided this environment and so much more. As a thirty something year old mother of two, wife and full time state employee, I knew that I would not learn things as quickly as a younger person and of course not be in the physical shape I was in my twenties. Your encouragement and patience have made me exceed even my own expectations.
I am currently in the best shape of my life but even more important I am gaining confidence in myself that I never thought possible. It has affected the way I approach every aspect of my life. It has truly taught me self discipline, which carry over to every day activities. Every time I receive another stripe or belt it is an affirmation that a person can accomplish almost anything by persistence and sheer determination.
Your studio is a very warm and friendly place that I actually can't wait to attend twice a week. Several people have approached me in the last couple of months about how healthy and young I look and I can honestly give you a lot of the credit. Thank you again for the great training and I have and would recommend this studio to any women looking for self improvement and physical fitness."
I've been overweight for most of my life. I started gaining weight in middle school and kept going until I was in my twenties I have tried so many things to lose the weight and I think that different things work for different people. I was lucky enough to find that martial arts worked for me.
I lost 22 pounds in one month without any just by going to class and it has been a life changing experience. I'm still embarrassed about how I used to look.
I just wish someone would have told me to join a martial arts when I was still struggling with my weight in my teens. So now I tell everyone that the best way to get your exercise is through martial arts training. It really has done wonders for my self esteem and confidence.
Let me give give you the number one reason why people miss out on finally getting the body and fitness that they so desperately want.
Many times people will come in and have an excuse ready as to why they can’t start up something like this. They believe that right now is not the right time to enroll. They say to themselves, “I won’t start because I can’t do an entire month right now. I am headed to California for a week and I will only be able to make class for three weeks out of the month so maybe I will join when I get back.”
Here's my point.
There will always be something that comes up.
In other words, for the person who really wants to try it out, there is always a way to work around the limitations.
I will always be willing to try and help you accomplish your goals. The only question you have to ask yourself is; “Am I willing to be the person who is working to accomplish my goals or is now ‘not the right time?’ Am I willing to try this out in order to see if it will give me the benefits that I want.”
Don't have the time to enroll into something like this? Well we have over 25 different class times every week.
There is a class time for almost everyone. The adult classes start as early as 6:00 pm and run as late as 7:15 pm. You can do it. Make the time.
Can you really afford not to?
We, the staff and instructors of the Las Vegas Kung Fu Academy hereby promise, that if during your introductory period, for any reason you feel we have not been professional, courteous and always willing to help you learn the material needed for advancement, or if you are not COMPLETELY, satisfied with our program, we will refund your enrollment fee up to 100%.
What's more, at the Las Vegas Kung Fu Academy, our success record speaks for itself. We strongly believe in serving each individual student and the specific needs he or she may have. If you want a school that will do everything it can to provide you a means of achieving the benefits you are looking for…then the Las Vegas Kung Fu Academy is the right school for you.
