Each day your child attends class they will have the opportunity to improve and develop these important qualities. However, children who already have these qualities will grow them even more!
Question: How do I know that my child will stay interested?
Answer: There are 4 main factors to keep your child interested in martial arts.
1)We have a rotating curriculum that we go through. Every week the students are learning various disciplines - boxing, weapons, self defense, grappling. Our curriculum is designed to give students new material to learn that will excite and motivate them through every step.
2)Every April and October we host belt testing. Belt testing is something that pushes the kids to stick with it and remain motivated. Each time a child is promoted to the next belt it excites the child. They are very proud of what they've accomplished and receiving their new belt. With a new belt comes new expectations.
3)Consistency with their attendance. It is important for kids to be consistent with their training on a weekly basis. Kids that are consistent will continue to progress and see an improvement in their martial arts skills. Kids that are inconsistent with their attendance will lose interest and eventually drop out.
4)Parents commitment to their child's training. As long as parents remain committed to their child's weekly martial arts schedule, the child will be able to progress and reach their life goal of obtaining a Black Belt. Throughout the years, we realized that kids don't quit martial arts training, parents do.
Question: Should I practice with my child at home?
Answer: Yes, we highly recommend you practicing with your child at home. In fact, we do ask the children if they've been practicing at home. It's like taking piano lessons. Would you have your child go to the lesson, then not have them practice at home? How will your child remember what they've learned? Home practice is the best way to retain and perfect what they have learned in class. Home practice doesn't need to be long. In fact, 10-15 minutes of home practice per day is sufficient.
Question: Will martial arts make my children more violent?
Answer: At the Las Vegas Kung Fu Academy, children are taught that martial arts are not to be used in anger or madness, but rather to defend themselves in dangerous situations. We try to help an aggressive child develop self control, and a shy child develop confidence. We remind the kids to use common sense and avoid conflict with non-aggressive solutions. However, if a child is in an aggressive situation that can’t be resolved peacefully, he or she will at least have the basic martial arts skills to defend themselves.
Question: Can my child get hurt doing martial arts?
Answer: Martial arts is actually a safe activity. However, martial arts (like any other sport) has its various risks and dangers. We always try to be safe and do what we can to prevent injuries. Kids in football or soccer are more prone to having injuries than a child enrolled in martial arts. Because of the way our classes are taught, most situations that can cause injuries are eliminated. We remind the kids to practice self control when executing a punch or kick. Because of the emphasis on self control, our kids classes are safe and fun. Of course, like in any contact sport, occasional bumps and bruises are possible, but we work our hardest to make sure that they are very rare. From the beginning to the end of the class, the instructors are always keeping an eye on everything that goes on.
Question: Is martial arts fun?
Answer: Yes, it's fun! Our martial arts classes will be the most fun you child can have in one hour. If you watch one of our classes, you will see how our instructors are skilled in taking a basic move and turning it into something fun and challenging. At our school, we camouflage what would normally be seen as hard work (like exercise) into something fun and playful. For example, we have kids doing partner drills, animal warm ups, and practicing with a pair of punching/kicking mitts. Our classes are always a blast. Martial arts are inspiring and life changing, from the mental to the physical. What could be more fun that?
Question: Are the martial arts good for little girls, young teenage girls, and women?
Answer: Yes, it is! Martial arts are not just for boys. We have a good mix of girls and boys in our martial arts classes! Some people think that the boys are much more coordinated and a quick learner. We must throw all stereotypes out the window. Girls are just as coordination, capable, mentally tough, and strong individuals.
Do children's confidence and self-esteem improve with martial arts?
Answer: Absolutely. Kids who are shy or has low self-esteem often come out of their shells. We teach kids how to be confident in many different ways. In our martial arts school, children's confidence increases with each belt promotion, or each time they answer a question correctly, or when an instructor gives them a praise for executing a move correctly. Instilling confidence in a child is not an easy task, but we've done it time and time again.
Question: Does my child need their own equipment gear?
Answer: If your child is enrolled in a trial program, they are able to borrow our equipment. However, when enrolling in our regular program students are required to have their own equipment gears. Equipment are purchased here at our martial arts studio.
