  • What are 5 traits of BJJ black belts that make them so dangerous?

As a practitioner of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) for over 2.5 years, I have had the opportunity to train with various black belts and high-ranking BJJ practitioners. Through my experience, I have come to appreciate the unique skillset possessed by these individuals and the impact it has on their ability to dominate on the mat. In this article, I will explore the key characteristics that make black belts such formidable opponents in BJJ.

BJJ Black Belt

One notable characteristic I have observed in individuals holding black belts in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is their ability to stay ahead of their opponents mentally. They possess the skill of baiting their opponents into positions that appear advantageous, only to turn it around in their favor and secure a submission. Their extensive experience with techniques and the reactions to them allows them to draw from a vast range of follow-up moves.

Another critical attribute of high-ranking BJJ practitioners is their mastery of utilizing weight and biomechanics to neutralize their opponents' strategies. I have learned that minor adjustments in the positioning of limbs or body can significantly reduce the requirement for strength or cardiovascular endurance to defeat an opponent. Black belts seem to have a natural inclination to make these subtle modifications and leverage them to their advantage.

Furthermore, black belts excel at conserving their energy reserves. As a beginner, I would deplete my energy reserves too quickly in a roll. In contrast, rolling with a black belt, I noticed that they conserve their energy until they require it. This ability stems from their aptitude in using their weight and biomechanics efficiently, enabling them to remain relaxed and composed throughout the roll.

Additionally, high-ranking BJJ practitioners are adept at imposing their game plan on their opponents. They have the capacity to compel their opponents to do exactly what they want, leading them to triumph. If a black belt intends to submit their opponent in a specific position, they typically succeed at a higher rate than a lower-ranking belt.

Lastly, black belts are skilled at teaching Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. They possess the knowledge and expertise needed to assist others in developing their skills. In my gym, black belts are exceptional at conducting formal classes and helping others with informal inquiries or techniques.
