  • What do you need before your very first BJJ class?

So, you signed up for BJJ trial class and forgot to ask the coach what you need to prepare for it? Don't worry we got ya. Here: are all of the things you need to consider before attending your first BJJ class.

Your first BJJ class

Are you preparing for your first jiu-jitsu class? That's great! Here are some tips that may help you feel more at ease and prepared:

Choose comfortable clothing - Jiu-jitsu involves a lot of movement, so you should wear comfortable clothes that allow you to move around freely. I suggest opting for something stretchy, lightweight, and not too baggy. You can wear a rash guard and board shorts, or any outfit that suits you.

Trim your nails and remove jewelry - You must trim your nails and take off any jewelry before class. You don't want to accidentally scratch your training partner or get your jewelry caught. Additionally, some gyms prohibit wearing jewelry on the mat, so it's best to be cautious.

Stay hydrated and nourished - Jiu-jitsu is a fairly rigorous workout, so staying hydrated and well-nourished is critical. Make sure you drink plenty of water throughout the day, particularly leading up to class. I recommend giving yourself at least two hours to hydrate. You don't want to go to class bloated with water. You may also want to have a light snack before class, like a banana, trail mix.

Be receptive to learning and inquiring - Jiu-jitsu can be overwhelming at first, but don't be concerned! Everyone begins as a beginner. Be receptive to learning new things and don't hesitate to ask questions if you don't understand something. Your instructor and training partners are there to assist you.

Have fun, be courteous - Jiu-jitsu is a fantastic way to stay in shape, learn new abilities, and make friends. Approach your first class with a positive attitude and enjoy yourself! However, always be respectful to your training partners and instructors. Jiu-jitsu is a community-oriented sport, and we all help each other out.

Bonus tips:

Bring a water bottle and a towel - You will definitely work up a sweat during class, so bring a water bottle and a towel to stay hydrated and wipe off sweat. I felt weird on my first BJJ class when I forgot my towel and my sweat dripped on the mats.

Don't strive for perfection - Jiu-jitsu is a complicated martial art that takes time to master. Don't worry if you don't grasp everything right away - just keep showing up and practicing, and you'll improve over time.

Pay attention to your body - Jiu-jitsu can be physically taxing, so pay attention to your body and don't push yourself too hard. If something hurts, speak up and let your training partner know.
