  • What do you need before your very first BJJ class?

So, you signed up for BJJ trial class and forgot to ask the coach what you need to prepare for it? Don't worry we got ya. Here: are all of the things you need to consider before attending your first BJJ class.

Your first BJJ class

So you're getting ready for your first jiu-jitsu class? That's awesome! Here are some tips that might help you feel more at ease and prepared:

  1. Wear comfortable clothing - Jiu-jitsu involves a lot of movement, so make sure you wear clothes that are comfortable and allow you to move around freely. I recommend wearing something that's stretchy, lightweight, and not too baggy. A rash guard and board shorts are popular options, but you can wear anything that works for you.
  2. Trim your nails and remove jewelry - It's important to trim your nails and remove any jewelry before class. You don't want to accidentally scratch your training partner or get your jewelry tangled up. Plus, some gyms have rules against wearing jewelry on the mat, so it's best to play it safe.
  3. Stay hydrated and fuel up - Jiu-jitsu is a pretty intense workout, so it's important to stay hydrated and well-nourished. Make sure you drink plenty of water throughout the day, especially leading up to class. I would give myself at least two hours so I wouldn't go to class bloated with water. You might also want to eat a light snack before class, like a banana or some trail mix.
  4. Be open to learning and asking questions - Jiu-jitsu can be a little overwhelming at first, but don't worry! Everyone starts as a beginner. Be open to learning new things and don't be afraid to ask questions if you don't understand something. Your instructor and training partners are there to help you.
  5. Have fun and be respectful - Jiu-jitsu is a great way to stay in shape, learn new skills, and make friends. So go into your first class with a positive attitude and have fun! But also remember to be respectful to your training partners and instructors. Jiu-jitsu is a community-oriented sport, and we all help each other out.

Bonus tips:

  1. Bring a water bottle and a towel - You're definitely going to work up a sweat during class, so bring a water bottle and a towel to stay hydrated and wipe off sweat. I forgot a towel on my first BJJ class and I felt so weird about all of my sweat dripping on the mats.
  2. Don't worry about being perfect - Jiu-jitsu is a complex martial art that takes time to master. Don't worry if you don't get everything right away - just keep showing up and practicing, and you'll improve over time.
  3. Pay attention to your body - Jiu-jitsu can be physically demanding, so pay attention to your body and don't push yourself too hard. If something hurts, speak up and let your training partner know.
