  • Are you making these common mistakes with your De Ashi Barai?

Avoid these mistake with you De ashi: Being too far, Not enough follow through and Telegraphing your intentions.

De Ashi Barai

Mistake 1: Telegraphing the move

One of the most common mistakes is telegraphing the move, which means signaling your intention to your opponent before executing the throw. This can happen when the Judoka raises their leg too high or steps too far forward before sweeping their opponent's foot. However, the most common telegraph is to look down at your opponent's feet. (Do you do this without realizing it?)

Videotaping your Randori sessions will reveal a lot about your tells, I highly recommend you film yourself. It's always an eye-opener for me when I do it.

Mistake 2: Incorrect positioning

If you want to improve your De Ashi Barai technique in Judo, make sure you avoid improper positioning. One common mistake is having your hips too far away from your opponent or your weight distributed unevenly, which can result in a lack of leverage for executing the technique effectively. As a beginner, you may be too far away to generate enough power, so try cutting the distance in half and see if your sweeping percentage improves. You should be almost chest to chest close.

Mistake 3: Poor timing

When you're practicing De Ashi Barai in Judo, remember that timing is crucial. If you attempt the throw too early or too late, your opponent may be able to counter or avoid the technique. One common issue is when the foot you're trying to sweep is stuck to the floor and cannot be moved. If this happens to you frequently, try sweeping half a second earlier and see if it improves your success rate.

Mistake 4: Insufficient kuzushi

To effectively sweep your opponent's foot in Judo, it's important that you focus on proper off-balancing or kuzushi. Without proper kuzushi, you won't be able to execute the technique effectively. As a beginner, you may tend to use kuzushi that is too short and explosive, similar to a punch. Instead, focus on using longer and more gradual kuzushi that covers more distance. Remember to follow through with the technique as well, as this will also improve your success rate.

Mistake 5: Lack of follow-through

Finally, if you aren't scoring with de ashi barai you probably aren't following through enough. To effectively sweep your opponent's foot in Judo, it's important that you focus on proper off-balancing or kuzushi. Without proper kuzushi, you won't be able to execute the technique effectively.
